Dating 101, continued

I’m continuing an entry detailing new (and always-humbling) insights into myself, life, God, and affection as Sarah and I continue our dating relationship.
On friendship and figuring each other out
What Sarah’s helping me realize is that any romantic relationship must be, at its foundation, a great friendship. At the beginning we both assumed we were fantastic friends, which was true […]

Dating 101

I’m going to be candid and share with you some dating lessons I’ve learned (with Sarah’s permission!). My buddy Jeff was right when he told me, “Dating’s a good way to learn how much you need grace.” And I need boatloads of it. Here we goooo…
Transitioning from self-sufficiency to dependency
From very early on in my life, I’ve […]

The Eat to Survive Diaries: Soup Edition

They tell me that soup is one of the easiest things you can make: just grab a bunch of random stuff together and throw it in a pot to boil.
So I tried it out.
How to live!

Two stalks bok choy, diced
1 carrot, sliced
1 potato, diced
2 leftover radishes, sliced
A handful of leftover mushrooms, sliced
1 can chicken broth
Some seasonings. I just Googled this.

Go!

Pour in 1 cup water with […]

Scents and memories

Sarah and I were talking about how scents are strongly associated with memories. A few of mine:

The scent of redwood bark: This reminds me of being off at various retreat sites in Santa Cruz and the memories of friends
The scent of the first rain: Doesn’t it just make you happy?
The scent of eucalyptus leaves: Walk through the IAS […]

The kindness of strangers

I like observing kindness demonstrated by strangers to other strangers.
Today at lunch, a couple walked by my table and let me know that I had dropped my wallet. Turns out it had fallen out of my pocket onto the ground. Small gesture, but it meant a lot to me.
I also like:

Seeing students talking to homeless people, treating them […]

Lifestyle Change #1: Riding a bike

This semester’s been one of changes. Among them is my decision to bring my bike up to school and do some good ol-fashioned pedaling around Berkeley.
I brought the bike I used to ride in the seventh grade — complete with the bike rack on the bike I used to strap my clarinet into. Yeah, it’s that old. The […]

Watch the McCain-Obama debate Twitter feed

For those of you who are watching the McCain-Obama debates tonight, you can check out Twitter’s election feed at http://election.twitter.com.

You’ll basically be watching Twitterers react to the debates in real time — pretty amazing, if you ask me. It’s like watching a national conversation unfurl right in front of your eyes. Try it out tonight!

It’s a long way to San Diego

I’m not a big fan of traffic. Especially not the Friday afternoon get-me-outta-LA kind of traffic.
Yesterday, I nearly rear-ended another car as it abruptly braked. I don’t remember slamming on the brakes as hard as i did then, and my car gave everybody the show of making terrible skidding noises and leaving a trail of tire […]

The Eat to Survive Diaries: A Typical Breakfast

I’m writing this series to chronicle my forays into cooking. For myself. Let’s say that on the cooking scale of 1 to 10, one being a rock and ten being Rachael Ray, I’m a zero. Get ready for a wacky and wild ride into Andrew’s gastronomical world…
Okay, so it’s morning. I’ve just come back from a run. […]

The Eat to Survive Diaries: Part 1

I’m writing this series to chronicle my forays into cooking. For myself. Let’s say that on the cooking scale of 1 to 10, one being a rock and ten being Rachael Ray, I’m a zero. Get ready for a wacky and wild ride into Andrew’s gastronomical world…
Okay, so I’ve got leftover pasta sauce from yesterday’s spaghetti. […]
